In Japan there are many options for places to stay such as Ryokan, capsule hotel etc. But if you want to really have a chance at interacting with Japanese people and trying a living style similar to many Japanese then I recommend staying at one of these Minpakus.
This one here is pretty typical, however because they are usually family owned and operated they all have there own unique personality.
Before staying at Minpaku I suggest reading up on at least the basic etiquette of staying at one. Locals always react positively when someone shows a keenness of their culture.
